Shopify AEO is mostly checking what Shopify already does for you, then fixing the gaps. Eligible products reach ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Meta without a feed, and every store serves /agents.md and /llms.txt. What's left is yours: confirm the store is eligible, publish your knowledge base, make product data clear, and earn mentions on other sites. Nothing guarantees a placement.
What does Shopify do for AI search by default?
| What | Default | What's left for you |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Catalog | Sends eligible products to AI channels, with live prices and stock | Check eligibility and data mapping |
| Agent discovery files | /agents.md, /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt served automatically | Customize only if you need to |
| Knowledge base | Facts generated from your store | Review and publish them. Facts from the storefront scan stay unpublished until you do |
| Crawler access | Bot management handled by Shopify | Allow or block crawlers in robots.txt.liquid |
| Reporting | AI orders labeled by channel in your admin | Read it |
How do I get my Shopify store found in ChatGPT?
Work through this in your Shopify admin:
- Check eligibility. Go to Sales channels > Agentic. Next to Shopify Catalog you see a product count or Ineligible, and clicking that shows the reason.
- Complete your policies. ChatGPT requires terms of service, a privacy policy and a return policy. Your store must sell to the US for ChatGPT.
- Publish your knowledge base. Returns, shipping times and brand facts are what agents use to answer non-product questions. It holds up to 1,000 facts, and what's published is public.
- Fix product data. If titles or descriptions live in metafields or tags, map them on the Channel mapping page. Group products that are really variants.
- Write product descriptions for questions. State materials, sizes, compatibility and who it's for. Put legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters.
- Check the store isn't hidden. Products behind a login or storefront password are left out, and so are B2B-only products. A password-protected store's knowledge base can't read the storefront either.
Does Shopify have llms.txt?
Yes. Every store serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, and by default all three return the same content: store name, URL, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints. You don't need an app for this.
To customize it, add an agents.md.liquid template to your theme, and /llms.txt follows it. Use llms.txt.liquid only if it needs to differ.
Shopify says these files don't replace Shopify Catalog. And no major AI engine has confirmed it reads llms.txt when answering, so don't expect it to move results alone.
Does Shopify block AI crawlers?
On the live stores read on 5 November 2026, robots.txt named no AI crawlers, and its general rules left products and collections crawlable. Shopify handles bot management at the network level and advises against a proxy in front of a store.
If you've added a custom robots.txt.liquid, a third-party CDN or a bot-blocking app, check them. These are the crawlers that decide whether you can appear in answers:
| Crawler | Used for | Block it, and |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | ChatGPT search | You lose ChatGPT search answers from your pages |
| Claude-SearchBot | Claude search | Claude's search answers can't use your pages. Claude has no Shopify Catalog channel, so this matters more |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity search | Perplexity's answers can't cite your pages |
| Googlebot | Google Search and AI Overviews | You leave Google altogether |
| GPTBot, ClaudeBot | Model training | Your choice; it doesn't affect search answers |
Blocking crawlers only affects the open web. It doesn't stop Shopify Catalog sending your products to the channels you've activated. To hide a product everywhere, set it to Unlisted, which also removes it from Google and your store's own search.
What else helps a Shopify store appear in AI answers?
Catalog gets your products into product results. A question like "best carry-on for a two-week trip" also draws on what the web says about you.
- Reviews and mentions on other sites. Ahrefs found branded web mentions correlate more with ChatGPT mentions than Domain Rating does. Correlation, on larger sites.
- Pages answering real questions. Size guides, comparisons and care guides, in the HTML. Several AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.
- Accurate structured data. Prices and names that match the page.
- Find out what's cited. Ask your customers' questions in ChatGPT and Gemini with web search on, and note which sites keep appearing.
How do I measure AI traffic on Shopify?
- Orders. AI channel orders show in your admin with channel or referrer attribution.
- Agentic section. Shopify gives search and sales insights for your products there.
- Asking. Run the same 10 questions monthly and record where you appear. Answers vary from run to run, so look for a trend.
How is AEO different from a Shopify ChatGPT app?
AEO gets you mentioned when someone asks. An app lets customers use your store from the chat, including their own orders and returns. AEO comes first, because it costs less and every store benefits. Paid ChatGPT ads are a third route, and they don't change answers.
How Transica helps
- Free page scan. Scan your store, no account. It reads the page's HTML without running JavaScript, along with
robots.txtandsitemap.xml, tests your rules against AI search crawlers, and scores access, content and structure (every check). - Done for you. On the done-for-you listing, from $1,500, Transica builds your store's own app, records the demo, prepares the submission and stays with you through review.
The scan reads rules and HTML. It doesn't ask any assistant about you, so it can't tell you whether you'll be cited, and it doesn't read Shopify Catalog.
Common questions
Do I need an AEO app for Shopify?
Not for the basics. Shopify generates the discovery files and sends products through Catalog. An app might help with monitoring or content, but check what it adds beyond what's already there.
Why isn't my Shopify store showing in ChatGPT?
Check Sales channels > Agentic for an Ineligible warning, then your US sales, policies, and whether products sit behind a password or login. Being eligible doesn't guarantee being shown.
Is Shopify good for AEO?
It handles the plumbing for you: Catalog, discovery files and crawler access. It doesn't write your product copy or earn mentions.
Can I edit llms.txt on Shopify?
Yes, through an agents.md.liquid or llms.txt.liquid theme template. Theme files have a size limit, and they travel with the theme, so recheck after switching themes.
What is the Shopify knowledge base?
Facts about your store, such as returns and shipping, that AI agents can query. Manage it under Sales channels > Agentic. It's replacing the Knowledge Base app, which is deprecated on 15 January 2027.
Does Shopify AEO work for Claude?
Partly. Claude isn't an Agentic Storefronts channel, so pages Claude can search and the Shop connector matter more.
Does Shopify help B2B stores with AEO?
Not through Agentic Storefronts, which supports only direct-to-consumer sales. Public pages can still be crawled and cited.
