Shopify already sends eligible stores' products to ChatGPT, with no setup and no fee. The Shopify plugin for ChatGPT is a separate thing, for store owners managing their store. Neither gives a store its own app in ChatGPT's directory, under its own name, where customers sign in and ask about their orders. That app is a separate project, and it can run on Shopify's own MCP servers.
Is there a Shopify ChatGPT integration?
Several, for different people.
| What | Who uses it | What it does | The store's own listing? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The store's own app | That store's customers | Products, policies and store locations, plus their own orders, returns and store credit after sign-in | Yes, once OpenAI approves it |
| Agentic Storefronts | Shoppers asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Meta | Products appear in results through Shopify Catalog | No |
| Shopify plugin for ChatGPT | Store owners and staff | Create and manage a store: products, inventory, orders, customers, discounts, analytics | No, it's Shopify's |
| Shop connector | Shoppers in Claude | Search across brands, check out with Shop, see Shop orders | No, it's Shop's |
How do I sell Shopify products on ChatGPT?
You probably already do. ChatGPT is active by default for eligible stores. To be eligible, a store needs to:
- Sell to customers in the US. It can be based elsewhere.
- Have products eligible for Shopify Catalog.
- Agree to Shopify's Agentic Storefronts terms.
- Fill in its terms of service, privacy policy and return policy.
Check the status in Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.
ChatGPT is a discovery channel. Shoppers buy on your own checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your normal payment processing. Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta can offer direct checkout in the chat if you turn it on.
To improve how you appear, see Shopify AEO.
Does a Shopify store need its own ChatGPT app?
Not to have its products found. Agentic Storefronts covers that.
An app adds what the catalog can't:
- A customer's own account. "Where's my order?", "Start a return", "What store credit do I have?"
- Your name in the directory, which customers can find and connect to.
- Tools only you have: fit finders, configurators, bookings, repairs, warranty claims.
- B2B stores. Agentic Storefronts supports only direct-to-consumer sales, and leaves out products behind a login or password.
- Claude. It isn't among Agentic Storefronts' listed channels. The same app can be listed there too.
A small store with simple products gets most of the value free. The case is stronger for brands with accounts, subscriptions, loyalty or high support volume.
How does a Shopify store's own ChatGPT app work?
One MCP server on your domain, such as mcp.yourstore.com, sits between ChatGPT and Shopify. ChatGPT only talks to that server. It calls Shopify's MCP servers behind the scenes.
| A customer asks | Sign-in | The server calls |
|---|---|---|
| "Do you have this in a size 10?" | No | Storefront Catalog MCP: search_catalog, get_product |
| "Is there a store near me?" | No | Storefront Catalog MCP: search_locations |
| "What's your return policy?" | No | The store's policy tool |
| "Where's my order?" | Yes | Customer Accounts MCP: get_most_recent_order_status, get_order_status |
| "What store credit do I have?" | Yes | Customer Accounts MCP: get_store_credit_balances |
| "I want to return this" | Yes | Customer Accounts MCP: request_return |
For anything those tools don't cover, the server can use the GraphQL Customer Account API or Storefront API.
Can I add Shopify's MCP URL to ChatGPT directly?
Not as a directory listing. Checked against one live store on 5 November 2026:
- Catalog calls need an agent profile. Shopify's
/api/ucp/mcprequires a profile URL in every request, which ChatGPT doesn't send. Listing tools worked, and callingsearch_catalogwithout a profile failed withinvalid_profile_url. - No tool annotations. The tools had no
readOnlyHintordestructiveHint, and OpenAI's guidelines require them on every tool. - Two servers. Catalog and customer tools live on different hosts, and a plugin has one MCP server.
- No self-registration. The store's sign-in metadata showed no dynamic registration or client metadata document, so ChatGPT can't register itself.
- Domain proof. OpenAI's token has to be served at
/.well-known/openai-apps-challengeon the MCP host or an eligible parent domain. A separate server on a subdomain can do that.
The server in the middle fixes all five. It also keeps checkout and other write tools off until you choose to offer them.
What does a Shopify store need for its own app?
- A custom domain. Shopify's docs require one for Customer Accounts MCP, though the tools worked without one on a development store tested on 5 November 2026.
- An app in Shopify's Dev Dashboard, with protected customer data and its name, email, phone and address fields requested. Without them, the tools refused or found no orders in that test.
- Redirect URIs for your MCP server in that app's customer authentication settings.
- A hosted MCP server with OAuth 2.1 for ChatGPT and Claude, chained to the store's customer login. How that chain works.
- A demo customer account with sample orders, which works without MFA or email codes. The store tested offered only an emailed code or Shop sign-in, which doesn't meet that rule as it stands, so settle how a reviewer signs in before you build.
- OpenAI's review: a verified organization, exactly five test cases that should work and three that shouldn't, a video and a privacy policy.
Shopify tells owners not to create an API token to connect an AI tool to their admin. A customer app doesn't touch the admin, and acts only as the customer who signs in.
How Transica helps
- Free page scan. Scan your store, no account, to see whether AI crawlers can read it.
- Free directory check. Paste an MCP server's address into the MCP directory check, no account, to see what ChatGPT's and Claude's directories would flag.
- Sign-in and hosting. Transica is the connector's OAuth 2.1 server for ChatGPT and Claude. A customer sees a consent screen, then signs in at the store's own login, and the AI app never holds the store's token.
- Listings. Transica checks tools against both directories' rules, runs the review's test prompts signed in as the demo account, and prepares ChatGPT's package and Claude's portal fields. You submit, and OpenAI and Anthropic decide.
- Done for you. On the done-for-you listing, from $1,500, Transica builds the app, records the demo, prepares the submission and stays with you through review.
Limits. No Shopify store has been tested end to end with Transica yet. Its build flow works from REST API specs and AI agents exploring a site, and doesn't connect to Shopify's MCP servers or GraphQL APIs directly yet.
Common questions
How do I connect my Shopify store to ChatGPT?
To sell, you don't connect anything: check Sales channels > Agentic in your admin. To manage your store from chat, install the Shopify plugin from ChatGPT and approve its access in your admin.
Does ChatGPT integrate with Shopify?
Yes, in two ways: Shopify Catalog sends products to ChatGPT, and the Shopify plugin lets owners manage a store from chat. Customers checking their own orders under your name needs your own app.
Can ChatGPT access my Shopify store?
Only what you allow. Catalog shares public product data. The plugin reaches your admin data only after you approve it, and within your user permissions.
How do I list Shopify products on ChatGPT?
Eligible products are listed automatically through Shopify Catalog. There's no feed to submit.
Does Shopify have ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
Not in ChatGPT today. Shopify describes ChatGPT as a discovery channel where purchases finish on your online store checkout.
Is there a fee for selling on ChatGPT through Shopify?
Shopify says no, beyond your standard payment processing fees.
Can customers check their Shopify order status in ChatGPT?
Through an app that uses Customer Accounts MCP after the customer signs in. Agentic Storefronts doesn't do this. The Shop connector has its own order lookup, with a Shop sign-in.
Can I turn off Shopify in ChatGPT?
Yes. Go to Sales channels > Agentic, turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me, select ChatGPT and turn off Shopify Catalog access. It can take up to 7 days, and products can still appear through web search.
Does the same app work in Claude?
Yes. Claude connects to the same MCP server, and Claude's directory has its own submission. See Shopify and Claude.
