How to turn a website into an MCP server
Convert your website to an MCP server for ChatGPT and Claude: the route for sites with an API, without one, or behind a login, step by step, with limits.
To turn a website into an MCP server, you put a small service in front of what the site already does and describe each task as a tool. If the site has an API, the tools call it. If it has only public pages, they can read those pages. If it has neither, there's little for a reliable server to call. The route depends on what's behind your site, so start there.
Which route fits my website?
| Your site has | Route | What customers get |
|---|---|---|
| An API with an OpenAPI spec | Generate tools from the spec and pick the useful ones | Reads and actions, with sign-in where needed |
| An API with no spec | Find the calls the site makes, then describe them as tools | The same, after more checking |
| Public pages only | Read-only tools that fetch and read those pages | Answers from your content and catalog |
| Tasks only behind a login, with no API | Add an API first, or use browser automation for your own team | Nothing reliable for customers yet |
Can you turn any website into an MCP server?
Technically, a server can read almost any public page. That doesn't make it a good product:
- Other people's sites. Scraping tools can read them, but you need the right to, and the owner's terms and
robots.txtstill apply. A directory listing needs a server for your own product. - Browser automation. Tools such as Playwright MCP drive a real browser. They suit developers and internal work, but they're slower and break when pages change, so they aren't a good base for a customer app.
- Sites with sign-in. A server shouldn't hold a customer's password. Customer data needs OAuth and an API that returns only that customer's data.
How do I convert my website to an MCP server?
1. Pick the tasks
List what customers come to your site to do: find a product, check an order, book a slot. Start with a handful. Each task becomes one tool, and a single catch-all tool gets rejected by Claude's directory.
2. Find what can do each task
Look for an OpenAPI spec, often at /openapi.json or linked from your developer docs. If there isn't one, open your browser's network tab and watch which calls the site makes as you do the task. Those are your API, even if it isn't documented, and you'll need to check they're stable and safe to use.
For a task with no API behind it, a read-only tool can fetch the public page and return its main text.
3. Split reads from writes
Mark each tool readOnlyHint or destructiveHint, and start with reads. ChatGPT requires explicit annotations on every tool. Offer changes, such as a return or a booking, only once you trust the reads.
4. Decide what needs sign-in
Public data, such as products and prices, needs none. Anything on a customer's account needs OAuth, ideally through the login your site already has. You can mix both on one server.
5. Build and host the server
It has to be a remote server on a stable public HTTPS address for ChatGPT and Claude to reach it. Five ways to build one, from the official SDKs to no-code tools.
6. Test it with real prompts
Add its URL to Claude as a custom connector and ask what a customer would ask. Watch which tool gets picked and whether the answer is right. Most problems are tool descriptions that don't say when to use the tool.
7. List it
A custom connector only works for people who add it by URL. For customers to find it, submit to ChatGPT's plugin directory and Claude's Connectors Directory.
How long does it take to convert a website to MCP?
It depends on your site more than the tool. A published spec and a few read-only tools is the short case. Undocumented APIs, customer sign-in and write tools each add work, and testing is where most of it goes.
Directory review is separate and out of your hands. WarrantyWarden's ChatGPT review ran from 13 to 29 October 2026.
Do I need an MCP server, or is WebMCP enough?
They do different jobs. WebMCP is a proposal for web pages to offer tools to agents working in the browser. An MCP server is what ChatGPT and Claude connect to, and what their directories list. A customer asking in the chat needs a server.
And if you only want to be mentioned in AI answers, you need neither: that's AEO.
How Transica helps
Transica does these steps for your own site.
- Free page scan. Scan a page, no account, to see what AI tools can read today.
- Find or explore. It looks for an API spec on your site, or sends AI agents through the site to see what it does.
- Draft and approve. It drafts each tool's name, description and inputs, and you approve them. In public mode only read tools are served.
- Sign-in. Customers sign in with your existing login, and you choose which tools need it.
- Test and host. It runs test prompts, hosts the server and checks it every 15 minutes, from $19 a month. Building is free.
- List. It checks tools against both directories' rules and prepares ChatGPT's package and Claude's portal fields. You submit.
- Done for you. On the done-for-you listing, from $1,500, Transica builds the app, records the demo, prepares the submission and stays with you through review.
Limits. Transica works on sites you can prove you own. What it can build depends on what your site exposes: a site with no API gets read-only tools at most. It can't promise a listing.
Common questions
How do I turn my website into an MCP server without coding?
Use a no-code tool that builds from your API or site. This comparison covers Transica, AnythingMCP, getmcp.com, Noodle Seed and others.
Does my website need an API?
Not for read-only tools that read public pages. For actions and customers' own data, yes, it needs an API or equivalent that the server can call safely.
Can I convert a WordPress or Shopify site to MCP?
Yes, both have APIs to build from. Shopify also has its own MCP servers, and WordPress and WooCommerce have plugins.
What's the difference between a website to MCP tool and a web scraper MCP server?
A scraper reads pages for whoever runs it, usually a developer. A website's own MCP server is built by the owner, with tools designed for customers and with sign-in where needed.
Will an MCP server replace my website?
No. It's another way in. It calls the same systems your site does, and customers still use the site.
Does an MCP server get my website into ChatGPT's answers?
No. That depends on search crawlers and content, and OpenAI says placement isn't guaranteed. An app is what customers connect and use in the chat.
Can one server work in both ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. Both connect to remote MCP servers, and each directory has its own submission.
What is a remote MCP server URL?
The public address of your server, usually ending in /mcp. It's what you paste into Claude or ChatGPT to connect.
